Hey, I’m Julie K.
It’s a fun adventure to start traveling with diabetes. And I’m so glad that I can come alongside you to help make it happen. If you’re nervous, unsure of yourself or struggling to see how you’re going to do this—not to worry. For the past 6+ years, I’ve been traveling to 28 countries, lived abroad and finished an IronMan. I helped thousands of people with diabetes to travel, get their power back over diabetes and experience a stress-free life.
As the founder and CEO of the Diabetic Travelers Network, and T1D since 1997, it’s safe to say I’ve “been there, done that” and can’t wait to help you do it too! With proven info, support, and a global community it CAN and WILL happen. Pretty soon you’ll be looking back and saying, “Wow! That was huge. I did it! I followed my dream and changed my life”!
I was diagnosed with T1D in 1997. As far as I can remember, I always wanted to explore the world, but I had no idea how to make it possible for myself. Diabetes was very stressful for me and I didn’t want anyone to know I had T1D by fear of being seen as a burden or being treated differently. But in 2015, I had the opportunity to do an internship abroad and I decided to apply to go to Australia. You should have seen my face when I got accepted. I had never traveled more than 4 hours away from home and no idea how to get insulin abroad. I had to figured it all out. It was endless sleepless nights let me tell you but I was determined to not let diabetes control my life.
Right before I took my first plane to Australia, security stopped me at the airport and confiscated all my ice packs; leaving my insulin at room temperature. I was devastated and felt STUCK. I ran around the airport looking for a solution without success. I was in panick. I remember thinking to myself “what were you thinking? Going 6 months to Australia with diabetes is such a stupid idea.”
At that moment, I had a choice.
Take the risk and embark on a 24-hour trip that could be one of the most amazing experience of my life or go home and be miserable. I used the chocolate ice cream from the meal served on the plane, which I placed in my cooler. 24 hours later, happy to have arrived in my new home, I started the travel adventure I for long dreamed of.
Since then, I have traveled to 28 countries, lived abroad, and finished an IronMan. I also happen to be a type 1 diabetic since 1997. This used to define me, but it doesn’t anymore.
